LinuxFEST is one of the most important events organised by Open Source
Network of Yugoslavia (OSNY). LinuxFEST is the only fair-like event that
takes place in Yugoslavia and its main aim is to promote Linux as a better
and cheaper operating system solution to the alternatives in a wide range of
applications, both amateur and mission critical.
How did everything start?
Well, a group of young enthusiast with almost no organisational experience
or fundings organised the first LinuxFEST in December 1999. The success was
beyond all expectations. Visitors' reactions were fantastic, not because of
the organisation but because of the idea itself. That first LinuxFEST has
shown the immense level of interest for open source solutions in Yugoslavia.
Almost the same group of people, this time with some organisational
experience and substantial help from several Yugoslav and international
companies (mainly Linux distributions and service providers), organised the
second LinuxFEST in December 2000.
The turnout was once again beyond the expectations. Several thousand people
that visited the event during the three days had a chance to get hold of
some of the most popular Linux distributions, software bundles, and what is
far the most important, they had a chance to share their experinces with
other Linux users with the same or similar professional interests.
Furthermore, the first Linux scientific conference to be held in the region
took place at the event.
